PS/IS 30 Steam Leadership Team

As part of PS/IS 30’s Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) initiative, our middle school students have joined together to launch our school’s first STEAM Leadership Team.  
 
Each Wednesday during NIA, our STEAM leaders are working together to plan and implement “Go Green” projects around our school with Ms. Tart and Ms. Moustapha. Many of the projects completed by the STEAM leaders will focus on beautifying and enriching our school environment.  
 
In an effort to keep PS/IS 30 eco-friendly, the STEAM leaders will be participating in an ongoing paper-making project where they will transform shredded paper scraps that would normally be discarded into beautiful, handmade stationary.
 
Recently our STEAM leaders planned and hosted a Daffodil Bulb Planting Event with our kindergarten, first and second grade students outside of our Early Childhood Annex Building. The STEAM leaders taught the elementary students about the life-cycle of daffodils as well as how to plant and care for the bulbs. Thanks to the STEAM Leadership Team, our elementary students planted dozens of bulbs in the front garden of the Annex Building. We are all looking forward to seeing the daffodil flowers this spring! Thank you to New Yorkers for Parks‘ Daffodil Project for donating the bulbs to our school!

GRAND.OPENINGParents of Kindergartners are invited to join us for the Grand Opening of our Library on Tuesday, October 27th.
Classes K01, K03, and K05 are invited at 8:30 am. Classes K02 and K04 are invited at 9:15 am.
The library is located on the 3rd floor, room 311. Our guest storyteller is Steven Savage, the author and illustrator of many picture books. Read more about the author here: http://www.stephensavage.net/

Monday September 28: 6th grade basketball tryouts.

Thursday October 1 and and Friday October 2: Picture day! Order forms will be sent home. Please return forms on picture day with cash, money order, or check. Students must be in school uniform for pictures.

Saturday, October 3: Please join us for a Bay Ridge tradition: the Ragamuffin Parade! We will meet in front of the school (4th avenue building) at 12:00. Students should wear a costume or school uniform. Permission slips will be sent home and are due on Friday October 2.

Attention Middle School parents! Principal Ms. Heeraman is setting up grade-specific meetings over the next three Tuesdays. Each meeting will start at 2:30 and end at 3:15.

 7th grade parent meeting October 6th;
8th grade parent meeting October 13th; and
6th grade parent meeting October 20th.

Ms. Heeraman will speak to parents about the importance of each grade, testing, SEL, AIS, SPED, Guidance, NIA, and all the other resources we have in place to assist our students.

Coffee and snacks will be served.
We can provide baby-sitting services for 5 years old and above. If you bring a newborn- 4 years old please bring an older sibling to watch them.

Join us: Ragamuffin Parade Saturday October 3

On Saturday, October 3th, 2015, Bay Ridge will be hosting its forty ninth Raga Muffin Parade. All PS/IS 30 students and their families are invited to participate!

Students who are walking in the parade are encouraged to wear a costume or school uniform. All participants are to meet Ms. Guzman in front of PS/I.S 30 at 12:00pm on October 3, 2015. (The Parade begins at 1pm and ends at 2pm)

Permission slips will be sent home this week. Please return to school by October 2, 2015. url-5

NYC School Chancellor Farina is holding parent conferences on Saturday October 3 (8am to 1pm) for Middle School Parents and on Saturday October 17 (8am to 1pm) for Elementary School Parents. These free, grade-specific, and informative events were created to support parents and to help them have an impact on their child’s education, both in school and at home.

Conferences take place at Tweed Courthouse, 52 Chambers Street, Manhattan. There will be free breakfast, free childcare for children older than 4 years old, and translation services

Come to Thursday’s PTA meeting at 4:15 at 7002 4th Avenue to meet other parents and teachers and learn how you can contribute to PS/IS 30. The PTA meeting will be followed by a Parent Information Night beginning at 5:30 pm, with presentations by Principal Ms. Heeraman, teachers and administrators. Learn and ask questions about school policies and curriculum for each grade.

Important reminders: School closings and PTA meeting

  1. No school Monday and Tuesday September 14 and 15. All NYC public schools closed for religious holiday.

  2. First PTA meeting Thursday, September 17 at 4:15 pm! Connect with other parents and teachers and learn about your school. The meeting will be followed by a Parent Information session at 5:30 pm.

If you ordered your school uniform before August 1, you may pick up your uniform Tuesday, September 8 from 9 am to 4pm. Registration for NIA Afterschool will also be available.
