Earth Science Activities Open House

Since the 1950’s, Lamont-Doherty research scientists and graduate students have prepared Open House exhibits, lectures and demonstrations on a wide range of earth science topics and current developments in the earth sciences. Exhibits are aimed at different ages and educational levels, from elementary school-age children to college students, to those well versed in the earth sciences.

You are invited to Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory biennial Open House on Saturday, October 8, 2016 in Palisades, NY—a day filled with fun and informative earth science activities for parents, children and science enthusiasts of all ages.
At Open House you can —

*   Visit the Seismic Sound Lab and experience the sights and sounds of earthquakes.
*   Use a seismometer to measure the ground motion generated by your own movement.
*   Examine centuries-old tree trunks and learn what tree rings tell us about past climate.
*   Create your own eruptions at our hands-on exhibit featuring volcanoes of different eruptive intensity, volcanic rocks, and volcano research.
*   Attend an earth science lecture on the latest research and discoveries at the Observatory.
*   Explore the Arctic of the future through hands-on activities that demonstrate the impact of sea ice loss.
*   Feel how a bathtub full of cornstarch and water can be used to understand the dynamics of the solid Earth.
*   Join Lamont Tree Ring Laboratory scientists and Earth2Class teachers on a “Dendro Eco-Hike” that explores Lamont’s Forest History through tree-ring analysis.
*   Take walking tours of the campus with graduate students who share the experience of developing their own research and work at Lamont.
