Our School Garden

In 2014, PS/IS 30 became a STEAM school and our interest in creating a school garden was born. We received a grant through Grow to Learn NYC to make that dream a reality. Our asphalt covered schoolyard now houses wooden raised beds, vertical hanging containers, and several recycled tired containers. We grow lettuce, herbs, strawberries, beans, and domestic flowers that support butterfly pollination in NYC.

Our school’s garden is a shared learning space where all of our students can practice essential 21st century STEAM skills. Our students are involved in designing, building, planting, and maintaining our school garden. They are learning to think as scientists, engineers, artists, and mathematicians who use technology to positively impact their community. They apply the skills they are learning in their classrooms to a real-world setting.
